The "Casa Editrice Università La Sapienza" (publishing house of the University of
Rome "La Sapienza") publishes the "Italian Journal of Engineering Geology and
Environment".
The Journal has the following format:
-

volume size (L x H): 220 x 280 mm;

-

print area: 185 x 216 mm, on two 87 x 216 mm columns (one for the

Italian text and the other for te English text).
Manuscripts should be submitted to Editorial Board ("EB"), which may accept them
with recommended revisions or additions or reject them.
Copyright in all the material accepted for publication should be transferred to the
Journal.

KEY REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF MANUSCRIPTS
1)

Manuscripts should preferably deal with scientific, technological and

design topics related to environmental hazards, such as:

- soil conservation, with special emphasis on landslides, deep-seated gravita-

tional slope deformations, subsidence, remediation and stabilisation
works;

- hydrogeology, namely research on aquifers in various geological settings,

study of groundwater circulation, aquifer vulnerability assessment, man-
agement and pollution control and water intake structures;

- hydraulics, with special emphasis on methods of assessment of floods and

protection structures;

- technical characterisation of soils and rocks (also with regard to slope stabil-

ity), search for and study of natural building materials;

- engineering-geological surveys, geological exploration of the subsoil and the-

matic mapping for urban and country planning, including environmental
impact assessment and assessment of geological hazards (landslides,
floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions);

- study of soil and water pollution, including design of remediation works;
- study of bedrock for engineering-geological and civil engineering purposes

and for construction of engineering-geological models.

2)

Manuscripts submitted for publication should not have been previously pub-
lished or simultaneously submitted to other journals.

3)

Manuscripts should have an original content or involve major extensions, inno-
vations or revisions of already published papers. Manuscripts with uninterpret-
ed data will be rejected.

4)

The EB may require Authors to supply any "in press" References cited in their
manuscripts, in order to conduct a well-informed review.

5)

Manuscripts should conform to the "Instructions to Authors" (see Section
below). Manuscripts will be considered as delivered when they have been
received by the Scientific Editor-in-Chief ("SEC", currently Prof. Prestininzi)
in complete form and in accordance with these Guidelines.
Otherwise, the submitted manuscripts will be returned to Authors for resub-
mission in complete and due form.
In the latter instance, the date of receipt will be the date when the text and its
attachments, in complete and due form, have been received by the SEC.

Multi-Author manuscripts should carry the name of the Corresponding Author
(name, surname, postal address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail address).
Any communication or decision made by the Corresponding Author will be
supposed to represent the opinion of all other Authors.

7)

The SEC will deliver the manuscript to the Referees and will be responsible for
its review and editing.

8)

Manuscripts will be delivered to at least two Referees, who will keep them
absolutely confidential and who may opt to remain anonymous.

9)

Publication of the manuscript will be solely decided by the SEC and the EB.

10) Correction of proofs should be restricted to printing or typesetting errors. No

other corrections will be accepted at this stage.

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS
The manuscript (in 3 "hard copies", including text and figures) should be submitted,
together with a cover letter, to the SEC at the following address: Prof. Alberto
Prestininzi, Università degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza, Centro di Ricerca CERI
"Previsione, Prevenzione e Controllo dei Rischi Geologici", Piazza Umberto
Pilozzi, 9, 00038 Valmontone.

Texts should be written in English (in Italian and English for Italian Authors) in
accordance with the requirements specified below in the MANUSCRIPT

PREPARATION Section.

As a general rule, the length of manuscripts should not exceed 20 printed pages
(exceptions may be agreed with the SEC).
To estimate the length of the printed text, account should be taken of the space
occupied by figures and tables, titles, etc. If, in the opinion of the SEC, the text
is too long, it will be returned to the Author before the review process.

3)

Captions to figures, tables or plates (in Italian and English for Italian Authors)
should be embedded into the text, in the place where the figure, table or plate
is to be inserted.

4)

The final version of the manuscript should be saved onto a digital medium in
accordance with the requirements stated below in the DIGITAL COPIES Section

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION
Manuscripts should be typed (in Italian and English for Italian Authors) with
Microsoft Word for PC or Mac with the following format: Times New Roman, 9 pts,
justified text, single spacing, 0.5 cm indentation from left margin, without hyphens
at the end of the line.
Each page should be numbered and printed with the best possible quality (prefer-
ably with a laser printer) on a single side of the sheet. The same process should be
used for drawings. The heading, not exceeding one line, should contain the concise
Title of the paper, the Corresponding Author and the page number (Times New
Roman).

Titles (Times New Roman, 10 pts, capitals, bold, left justified) should not be pre-
ceded by letters or numerals. The main text may be divided into three hierarchical
levels:
·

Level 1 title (centred, capitals, above the text);

·

Level 2 title (small capitals, left justified, above the text);

·

Level 3 title (italics, left justified, above the text).

All illustrations should be cited in the text as Fig. 1, Table 1, Plate 1, etc. Parts of
figures should be indicated as Fig. 3a, etc. The word/s "figure/s" should not be
abbreviated at the start of a sentence (e.g. "Figure 1 shows/Figures 1 and 2 show").
Use of footnotes in the text should be kept to a minimum. Footnotes will be num-
bered consecutively and automatically by Microsoft Word. For the content of foot-
notes, use should be made of the Normal style.
Some parts that are not essential for understanding the text (lists of data, special
descriptions, etc.) may be typed with single spacing.
References quoted in the text should be put between parentheses: name of the
Author in small capitals, comma, year of publication. Multiple References consec-
utively quoted should be put in chronological order and separated by a semi-colon
(e.g. R

Papers in preparation or review and oral communications may be quoted in the text
but not in the References.
In the text, long and recurrent phrases may be used in the expanded form the first
time, followed by the acronym between parentheses; the acronym will be used in all
subsequent recurrences of the phrases (e.g. consolidated undrained test: CU test).
Too many acronyms within the same article are not recommended.
Cardinal points should be quoted in the expanded form in small letters (e.g. to the
north, to the west-south-west of Rome). However, they should be abbreviated when
they represent directions (e.g. WSW-ENE, NE-SW).
Measurements should be given in SI (International System of Units) metric units,
using standard symbols (km, m, mm, kPa) in small letters and not followed by a
period; exponents, too, should conform to the SI (exponent written as a superscript,
e.g. m

and not cu. m.).

Appendices, which may be used to describe any particular procedure, should be

consecutively numbered with Roman numerals (italics above the text).
Acknowledgements
Acknowledgements, to be placed at the end of the text, should be headed
"Acknowledgements" (Times New Roman, 10 pts, bold, capitals, left justified).
References
The list of References, in alphabetical order, should be headed "References" (Times
New Roman, 10 pts, bold, capitals, left justified). The list should include all and
only the References cited in the text. Papers that have been accepted for publication
and that are actually in press may be cited, specifying the name and the volume of
the journal or the degree or Ph.D. thesis.
No papers in preparation or pending approval for printing may be cited.
References should be arranged alphabetically by Author's surname. For references
with two Authors, list alphabetically by first Author's surname and then alphabeti-
cally by second Author's surname and so on.
Multiple papers by the same Author published in the same year should be specified
with small letters after the date (e.g. a, b, …).
Authors must be quoted with their surname (small capitals), followed by their dot-
ted initials; names of multiple Authors should be separated by commas and the last
Author should be preceded by "&". After the initials of the last or single Author's
name, the date of publication should be put between parentheses, followed by a
dash, by the title of the paper and by a period. Then, the name of the journal should
be specified with the usual abbreviations and followed by the volume number
(Arabic numerals, bold), by the issue number (between parentheses) from the initial
page to the last page (using 3 digits only, e.g. 457-632). All these numbers should
be separated by commas and terminate with a period. At the end of the Reference,
the place and country of publication should be indicated.
References should be listed in the following styles:

ILLUSTRATIONS
The approximate location of figures should be indicated in red at the centre of a
blank line (Fig. 1) interposed in the text.
The originals of figures should be printed in their final size on high-quality paper,
using laser printers.
Printed figures may have a maximum size of 185 x 216 mm. Authors should also
take into account the space occupied by captions, which will be positioned on the
same page as the one of the figure.
All maps, field drawings and photos should have a metric scale bar and, where nec-
essary, longitude and latitude. Maps and drawings should only include toponyms,
units of measurement, acronyms and numbers, so that each figure may be extracted
or quoted in other texts in a language different from the original one.
Figure captions should include a legend explaining the symbols, acronyms and num-
bers used in the figure. For example:

Copies of photos or slides may be enclosed to the manuscripts; printed copies should
have a minimum width of 185 mm. Plates with multiple photos should be provided
in their final size for printing, composed with the photo originals.
Plates are graphic representations (numbered consecutively and separately from fig-
ures), which are to be folded in order to fit the size of the Journal (gatefold pages).
At any rate, the number of folds should not exceed one or two.

If illustrations are taken from published papers (or topographic maps from official
cartographic sources), a written permission from the copyright holder should be
obtained and enclosed to the manuscript. However, the SEC may change the size
proposed by the Author after consulting with the Referee.

DIGITAL COPIES
Copies of manuscripts may be provided on CD-Rom (formatted for PC ISO 9600 or
MAC) or DVD. The digital media should be labelled with a) the name of the
Corresponding author and b) the title of the paper.
Text file conventions
Text files in Microsoft Word for PC or Mac (*.doc) should be named with the fol-
lowing convention:
[name of Corresponding Author]_eng.doc for the English version.
[name of Corresponding Author]_ita.doc for the Italian version (only for Italian
Authors).
Image file conventions
All images - saved in TIFF format (*.tiff) or (less preferably) JPEG format (*.jpg) -
should be supplied with the following sizes and resolution:
colour photos and images (CMYK colour, minimum width 18.6 cm with resolution
of at least 300 dpi)
black and white photos and images (grey scale, minimum width 18.6 cm with reso-
lution of at least 300 dpi)
line drawings, such as charts and Microsoft Excel graphs (grey scale, minimum
width 18.6 cm with resolution of at least 600 dpi)
Files should be named with the following convention:
[surname of Corresponding Author]_fig_01.tif for Figure 1;
[surname of Corresponding Author]_fig_02.tif for Figure 2.

PLATES (WITH ONE ORE MORE FOLDS)
When submitting manuscripts, Authors may ask the publisher to authorise them to
print their own plates, with one or more folds, in black and white or colour. The
plates may be glued to the 3rd page of cover or placed as loose inserts into a fold or
pocket in the same page. Together with their manuscripts, Authors should supply
facsimile plates in their final size for printing. The following identification data
should be printed on plates:

If the above data are missing, the printing firm (after consulting the SEC) will place
an identification band around the plates. The cost of the bands will be charged to the
Authors.
Authors should send their plates directly to the publishing house, when they return
the proofs with their "approval for printing".

PROOFS AND PRINTING EXPENSES
The publishing house will send proofs to the Authors in order to get their "approval
for printing". Proofs will be accompanied by an expense report/order form sum-
marising the expenses incurred for printing the article in colour, the plates and/or the
colour plates, as well as for folding and banding.
Authors should complete the order form, sign it for acceptance, specifying the num-
ber of offprints that they require (the first 10 copies are free of charge) and return it
with the proofs.
